About Me
My first Nia class was in 1993 at Body Moves in Portland, OR. Walking through the Nia doorway totally transformed my life.
In May 2001 I took the White Belt. Somehow during this time I was interviewed by Jeff and this became part of the NiaNow promo DVD. Later that year I had the great opportunity to travel to South Africa and teach Nia master classes and workshops in Cape Town!
I took the Blue Belt in 2002. Shortly thereafter in May, I had a chance meeting with Carlos when I asked him why Principle #11 of the White Belt was Principle #11 - unlike any of the other principles, this one seemed totally disconnected from the body. Carlos said "you'll after to answer your own questions." In August of that year I learned about an amazing new business school dedicated to business leadership for creating businesses that promote health and wellness. In biz vernacular, this is called the "Triple Bottom Line", i.e., social, ecological and financial profit. I applied and was immediately accepted.
From the beginning of business school I did all of my projects on Nia with the idea that this company is promoting health and wellness, the way that it is managed should promote health and wellness in society. This is the idea of "green" business. I am hugely passionate about the idea that the dance of the business body offers self-healing to society by the way we align with other values oriented companies to the kinds of products that are used in the delivery of services/products.
In 2005 I graduate from the Bainbridge Graduate Institute with an MBA in Sustainability Management. My final completion project was designing a strategic planning process for the Nia Technique Inc.
In 2005 I took the Brown Belt.
I was living in the Bay Area from the time of my White Belt and had the great opportunity to teach at a number of studios: MindBody Connection, Temescal Arts Center, Studio Rasa, Nautilus of Marin and then Meridian Sports Club and Body Tonic in San Francisco.
In 2008 I got to go to Bali, Indonesia and share Nia at the Bali Spirit Festival dedicated to the movement and healing arts - that was incredible. And in 2008 + 2009 I taught Nia at MovementPlay - one of the coolest events in NorCal featuring the mindbodyspirit movement arts.
I moved to Portland in January 2009 with the only intention to change my life. As it was, I landed in an amazing loft only 10 blks from StudioNia. I'm having an awesome time taking classes everyday and even getting to be on the faculty of Nia subs - an incredible honor and achievement. I took the Green Belt in March and the Black Belt in July.
In July I began working with Debbie and Jeff more directly. With supreme gratitude, I am able to live into my greatness in the process of developing a body-centered business philosophy for Nia. In retrospect, it is not "why" is business principle #11; rather, it is "how" is business principle #11? The answer to how is creating a sacred livelihood.
