About Nia

What is Nia?

Nia is a sensory-based movement practice that draws from martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. It empowers people of all shapes and sizes by connecting the body, mind, emotions and spirit. Classes are taken barefoot to soul-stirring music in more than 45 countries. Trainings are designed for those seeking personal enrichment and professional development. Every experience can be adapted to individual needs and abilities. Step into your own joyful journey with Nia, and positively shape the way you feel, look, think and live.

How does Nia work?

Nia draws from Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, jazz dance, modern dance, Duncan dance, yoga, Alexander Technique and Teachings of Moshe Feldenkrais. Every class offers a unique combination of 52 moves that correspond with the main areas of the body: the base, the core and the upper extremities. Stiff beginners and highly fit athletes alike can adapt Nia to meet their needs by choosing from three intensity levels. Consecutive trainings collectively explore 52 principles for personal enrichment and professional development. Read testimonials from people of all ages, backgrounds and locations.

STEP INTO THE MEADOW..... a weekend river retreat, guided by Ken Gilbert, Nia Trainer Faculty.

Stepping in to the Meadow along side the American River in Lotus, California - receive and express your experiences of heightened awareness of your Body|Mind|Emotion|Spirit as you see, hear and feel the grass, the sky, the trees and the sound of the river.

Listen to the whisper of the trees, Feel the pulsing of the grass, Hear the song of the river, Sense your Feet on the Meadow!

KEN GILBERT, MA, Nia Black Belt Education Trainer, will guide you into your body's unique capacity to access self-awareness and insights into your body's sensations evoking Joy and Pleasure. In your body, you will awaken your receptivity of sensation and your ability to stimulate your body's innate wisdom to self heal and choose pleasure. The weekend is intended for anyone seeking self-discovery in sensing the "presence" of every moment.

WE WILL STEP-IN to the Meadow Friday night to circle and set the focus & intention of our weekend.  We begin our relationship together with a potluck meal.  Bring a delish dish!

SATURDAY MORNING WILL BEGIN with a guided meditation and Nia class, after break followed by a workshop led by Ken Gilbert. 

SATURDAY AFTERNOON relax, swim, float or kayak.  Kayak lessons in eddy for those planning to add Sunday kayak trip to retreat package.* 

SATURDAY EVENING we co-create a meal together with your special contribution!

SATURDAY NIGHT we complete our exploration with a guided movement meditation, in the Body's Way, 75 trillion cells in harmony with the elements of nature, under the stars.  We close our circle with new insights in our relationship to self, key elements & inspirations to share from our experience.  

SUNDAY MORNING enjoy the morning at the river, before departure or preparation for kayak trip*.  

*COLOMA-GREENWOOD: Optional 3-mile Class II kayak river trip for beginners, limited space.  Contact host: Erin Davidson for details.  Seasoned kayakers welcome to join with own equipment.
