About Nia

What is Nia?

Nia is a sensory-based movement practice that draws from martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. It empowers people of all shapes and sizes by connecting the body, mind, emotions and spirit. Classes are taken barefoot to soul-stirring music in more than 45 countries. Trainings are designed for those seeking personal enrichment and professional development. Every experience can be adapted to individual needs and abilities. Step into your own joyful journey with Nia, and positively shape the way you feel, look, think and live.

How does Nia work?

Nia draws from Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, jazz dance, modern dance, Duncan dance, yoga, Alexander Technique and Teachings of Moshe Feldenkrais. Every class offers a unique combination of 52 moves that correspond with the main areas of the body: the base, the core and the upper extremities. Stiff beginners and highly fit athletes alike can adapt Nia to meet their needs by choosing from three intensity levels. Why was Nia created?

Notes About This Class

Stine Massboeuf and Marilene Walker are going to co-teach while I recover from a torn Achilles' tendon. I hope to be back to teaching soon! Regardless, I'll be there for classes. See you soon!

Mums with babies, I am happy for you to bring them to class and for you to take breaks as you need to see to their needs.

Classes will start back on Saturday 23rd August and run every week until Saturday 11th October.

The first six weeks will be taught be a variety of other Nia teachers basedin Scotland!

This Thursday evening class operates by five week blocks - which you must join at the beginning of a block if you are new to Nia. If you are an existing student, and would like to drop in on a Thursday from time to time, that is fine too! Please note that the drop-in price for Thursday evenings is £7 per class.

New to Nia? Then these 5 week courses are a perfect introduction to the joys of Nia. If you are new to Nia, you need to sign up for the whole block as we build up movements week on week, and it's a great way to get yourself familiar with Nia's 52 moves. Please feel free to message me for more information. Wear comfortable clothes you can move in, floor mats are provided - just bring water.

Two classes being offered!  

   10:30am-11:30am on Monday 8 September and

   1:00pm-2:00pm on Tuesday 9 September

Nia is a fun, expressive movement practice that leaves you feeling energised and alive. It brings cardiovascular conditioning and optimises whole body fitness in ways that feel good.  Moves are low impact, easy-to-follow, and you'll love the music!  Get your body moving and give your brain a good workout, as well.  Classes are warm and friendly and suitable for all fitness levels and abilities.  We dance barefoot whenever possible. Nia can be done seated as well.

Please, dress in something you like to move in, bring some water and come and enjoy!

Classes will be co-taught by local Nia teacher Cathy Ferris and visiting teacher Natalie Sloan who is based in London. 

Cathy will be demonstrating seated Nia!
