About Nia

What is Nia?

Nia is a sensory-based movement practice that draws from martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. It empowers people of all shapes and sizes by connecting the body, mind, emotions and spirit. Classes are taken barefoot to soul-stirring music in more than 45 countries. Trainings are designed for those seeking personal enrichment and professional development. Every experience can be adapted to individual needs and abilities. Step into your own joyful journey with Nia, and positively shape the way you feel, look, think and live.

How does Nia work?

Nia draws from Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, jazz dance, modern dance, Duncan dance, yoga, Alexander Technique and Teachings of Moshe Feldenkrais. Every class offers a unique combination of 52 moves that correspond with the main areas of the body: the base, the core and the upper extremities. Stiff beginners and highly fit athletes alike can adapt Nia to meet their needs by choosing from three intensity levels. Consecutive trainings collectively explore 52 principles for personal enrichment and professional development. Read testimonials from people of all ages, backgrounds and locations.

Why was Nia created?

Nia’s purpose is to grow a worldwide community of healthy people who are empowered to do great things. We believe every person can discover, explore, unleash and enhance their individual potential to live a fulfilling and meaningful life – by engaging their senses and listening to their bodies. With the right tools and education, we can increase our confidence and happiness. We can become connected to others to shape a consciousness that extends beyond our own. Together we will unearth possibilities never before imagined.

Notes About This Class

The Tango Club is now based in the history-filled and increasingly fashionable, artisanal London Bridge area where you can visit the popular Borough Market after class, watch glass blowing, or wander by the river and see Shakespeare's Globe rebuilt for our time.

The Tango Club studio is located at London's historic Leather Market. This is about a 7 minute walk from either London Bridge or Borough station.

From London Bridge Station:
Take the 'back' exit via Joiner Street, going left past the 'Shard' building onto St Thomas Street and walking along the side of Guy's Hospital. Turn right onto Weston Street. The Leather Market is a large building with enclosed courtyard on your left just after you cross over Leathermarket Street. Enter through the large iron gates of the far (southern) entrance. Building 8 faces you.

From Borough Station:
Cross over to the Church and walk down Long Lane. Turn left onto Weston Street and the Leather Market is on the right. Enter through the large iron gates of the near (southern) entrance. Building 8 faces you.

Building 8 is at the south-east corner of the courtyard, facing the large iron gates of the southern entrance. The studio is on the second floor - please use The Tango Club bell to gain entry.

Notes About This Class

Directions to the Maudsley
Close to Denmark Hill Station and central for those in South London, this location is well served by buses and is an easy walk from Camberwell. Map
By underground: The nearest stations are Oval and Elephant & Castle, from there the journey has to be completed by bus.
By bus: Routes 40, 42, 68, 176, 185, 468, 484 all stop right in front of the Hospital.
              Stopping at Camberwell Green (an 8-10 minute walk) are 12, 35, 36, 45, 171, 345, 436.
By rail: The nearest station is Denmark Hill (Zone 2). From Central London - London Bridge, Blackfriars, Farringdon, St Pancras and Victoria.
There are direct connections to Bromley, Bexleyheath and Croydon as well as services to North London, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Kent.
Transport for London's journey planner might help plan your journey.

Directions to the Gym
The gym is a separate building in the grounds of the hospital and is accessible via the main entrance and reception on Denmark Hill, opposite Kings College Hospital. When you inform the receptionist that you have come to do a class at the gym they will buzz you through to a long blue corridor that curves to the right and leads you after several minutes' walk all the way out of the building into the grounds. When you emerge from the building you follow the path to the right. A little way down on your right there is a fair sized building with an entrance on the near long side, up a couple of steps. This is the gym. If you are coming from Denmark Hill Station, it is quicker to come through the side gates. These are locked at 19:00, so the exit is through the main corridor. For directions to get to the gym once you are in the grounds, please see the Maudsley site map
