About Nia

What is Nia?

Nia is a sensory-based movement practice that draws from martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. It empowers people of all shapes and sizes by connecting the body, mind, emotions and spirit. Classes are taken barefoot to soul-stirring music in more than 45 countries. Trainings are designed for those seeking personal enrichment and professional development. Every experience can be adapted to individual needs and abilities. Step into your own joyful journey with Nia, and positively shape the way you feel, look, think and live.

How does Nia work?

Nia draws from Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, jazz dance, modern dance, Duncan dance, yoga, Alexander Technique and Teachings of Moshe Feldenkrais. Every class offers a unique combination of 52 moves that correspond with the main areas of the body: the base, the core and the upper extremities. Stiff beginners and highly fit athletes alike can adapt Nia to meet their needs by choosing from three intensity levels. Consecutive trainings collectively explore 52 principles for personal enrichment and professional development. Read testimonials from people of all ages, backgrounds and locations.

Why was Nia created?

Nia’s purpose is to grow a worldwide community of healthy people who are empowered to do great things. We believe every person can discover, explore, unleash and enhance their individual potential to live a fulfilling and meaningful life – by engaging their senses and listening to their bodies. With the right tools and education, we can increase our confidence and happiness. We can become connected to others to shape a consciousness that extends beyond our own. Together we will unearth possibilities never before imagined.

Notes About This Class

If you've tried Nia before, you know this class with Stacey will be fun. And if you’ve never tried Nia before, but you enjoy moving to music, I promise you will sweat AND smile!

Each class starts with slow, Tai Chi and Modern dance inspired moves to ease our bodies into flexible movement. Next we add some fun, heart stirring Taekwondo-style kicks and blocks along with some Jazz box steps and cha-cha-cha’s to really move our energy. Finally we lengthen, stretch and learn about our body using moves and strategies from the healing arts: yoga, Feldenkrais and the Alexander technique. Bodies of all shapes and sizes are encouraged to come dance, and adults of all ages are welcome -we have students in every age of fabulousness from 30's well into their 70's!

Wear clothes that make you want to move and bring your dancing soul as we groove to the beautiful and eclectic sounds of Nia music. Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated and be prepared to dance in bare feet to work over 7000 nerve endings in your feet (of course, if you have previous foot injuries feel free to bring shoes you can move in). A yoga matt is also recommended but not always used (usually it is for the last few songs).

Please call or email me if you have any questions at all, or if you are thinking of trying your first class but you want to know that a familiar face will be there to greet you on your first day.  :o)

I look forward to experiencing the joy of movement with you!

With joy and gratitude,

xo-stacey

Notes About This Event

Part bohemian barefoot holiday, part deep dive, part irreverent celebration, this week is a gentle yet head-on look at what death means to you and, with that, what it means for you to be truly alive.  You will explore your feelings around, ideas about, and experience with death until now, and maybe even welcome death back into your awareness as a rightful, organic place in your life cycle.  Running beneath it all is the intention for you to hold death  - this inevitable “end of things” - in your warm, curious gaze just steadily enough to feel into the preciousness of that which eventually “ends”.  To free up some of that life force that you’ve been using to keep death at bay and out of your awareness, and to pour it back into living life with fresh immediacy, sharp awareness and wild gratitude.  To experience your own impermanence lovingly mirroring back to you the delicious mystery and awe of your being in a body for this short while – a body that is just waiting to be fully breathed, sweated and shouted in a brief blast of technicolor.  And, at the end of the week, to return back home with death quietly in your pocket, like a friendly talisman reminding you what matters most.

You’ll arrive to a scene already set for us, on the first day of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).  Mexico’s heat, rhythm, and sensual landscape will right away invite you to dial down, soften in and open up; her people will show you that death is a welcome presence in daily life and how they celebrate her with heart and humor.  Your days will include Nia, freeform dance, meditation, ceremony, play, reflection, silence and other spontaneous happenings – in group sessions at least twice a day, as well as woven throughout our entire time together.  We will participate in temazcal, an ancient pre-Hispanic sweat lodge ceremony used for cleansing, purification and initiation.  And, to meet your craving for a restorative vacation, you will still have plenty of time to rest, swim, wander around town, take advantage of the spa services on the property, do any of the myriad activities available, or do nothing. (Playing at nearby Playa de los Muertos - Beach of the Dead - is a must!). The taste of our time together will curious and colourful, heartfelt and light-hearted. We will, without a doubt, leave with a deeper reverence for, and playfulness with, the gift that we get to open each day that we awaken.

“The endings of life give life’s meanings a chance to show.” – Stephen Jenkinson
