Over split weekends, 4-7 & 11-13 October, Australia’s first Nia Black Belt and Nia International Trainer, Sophie Marsh will be teaching the Nia White Belt in Brisbane, as the demand grows for Nia’s conscious use of movement for fitness, health, joy and connection.

The Nia White Belt intensive is 50+ hours of experiential body-mind education for personal growth or to share Nia professionally. But Nia comes with a warning. It is reported to change lives, to increase confidence and happiness and to make people feel great.

What is Nia? Nia is a movement practice that blends martial arts, dance and healing. It empowers people of all shapes and sizes by connecting the body, mind, emotions and spirit. Classes are taken barefoot to soul-stirring music. Nia has 52 moves that optimise the body’s natural design. Nia choreography is body-centred and allows practitioners to connect to nine diverse movement styles; tae kwon do, aikido, tai chi, jazz, modern dance, Duncan Dance, the Alexander Technique, yoga and the work of Moshe Feldenkrais. Nia classes balance form with freedom encouraging people to personalise the movements making choices for pleasure and comfort.

This year, Nia celebrates 30 years of changing lives (it’s been in Australia since the early 2000s). In a recent survey, the number One reason people gave for doing Nia was connection to something bigger than themselves. Connection to community, to earth, to life-force, to possibility.

Why should anyone take the Nia White Belt? Nia brings internal strength, control and mental as well as physical power. Nia develops agility, grace and increased range of motion. It offers groundedness and emotional as well as physical balance. Simple daily tasks like playing with the kids, cleaning the house, even driving the car, become easier. Best of all, Nia equates fitness with movement, not simply isolated exercise. It is not confined to the class experience or bound by the hands of a clock. Nia Technique can carry you through the day and through your entire life with greater ease and grace. 

Do you need any experience to do it? The only pre-requisite for doing the White Belt, is to be living in a body. No previous experience is necessary. The Nia White Belt caters to all ages, all fitness levels, for people healthy and healing, experienced and new to Nia.
