From the Founders
Debbie Rosas and Carlos Rosas, founders of the Nia Technique
At the height of the Jane Fonda era, when doing aerobics meant high-impact and bouncing, we had an idea and vision. We knew fitness could feel better and be experienced in a more holistic and effective way. We said, "Love is the way to create a healthy body. Choose pleasure over pain. Take off your shoes, feel your body, express yourself, and make conscious choices that support healing, transformation, health, well being, and personal growth. Change your body and life!"
We created Nia in 1983 out of a desire to discover a more pleasurable and expressive way to get fit. We are fascinated with the body, the mind, the emotions, and the spirit, and we have a deep curiosity for exploring human potential. This fascination and curiosity took us on a quest that created Nia - a movement, personal growth, and lifestyle practice that integrates the very best of Eastern and Western wisdom, including inspiration from the martial arts, dance arts, and healing arts.
Now, Nia has more than 1500 certified, licensed teachers and a team of 20 trainers that offer Nia in more than 30 countries. User-friendly and time-tested, Nia is practical, sensible, and adaptable to almost every body. The Nia workout DVD's, the Nia Intensive Training, and our NiaWear clothing line, all reflect the essence and nature of Nia - love, joy, power, passion, and grace! What began with us taking off our shoes in class and beginning the process of slowing down, expressing feelings, and sensing to become aware, has pioneered a way to get fit and stay healthy that is one of the most intelligent and transformational practices in the fitness industry today.
We are so glad to be able to share this work with you, and we look forward to discovering and sharing with you even more of the wonders of the body, and of being alive. Please share your thoughts and experiences with this work, and help us continue to shape the ever-evolving practice that is Nia.
In Love and Light,
