Nia Week June 17-24

Debbie Rosas recounts Nia Week at Rancho la Puerta.

When you spend a week at Rancho la Puerta for Nia Week you get a blend of being in nature, taking hikes into the desert every day, plus daily Nia classes and fabulous workshops. It is a complete body, mind, emotions, spirit experience that recharges you in every way.

The first night at the Ranch is always a meet-and-greet kind of night, and it always includes a Saturday night event, something informative and entertaining. Last year Carlos presented “Dancing Through Life” and because of popular demand he was asked to present it again. This time we added humor and spice to the presentation and made it “Dancing Through Life Without A Boom Box On Your Shoulder—The Body’s Way.” We led people through the practice of RAW (Relaxed, Alert, and Waiting) and made the experience something that would give people Dancing Through Life tools to use all week at the Ranch.

By the end of the evening we had everyone convinced that their week would be even more amazing by practicing RAW whenever they had a moment to: Relax – to be still in their body, such as when waiting in line for breakfast; be Alert – to be conscious and not miss a thing, staying open to every experience and drinking it in through all of their senses; be Waiting – to be still and in the Now, not seeking or rushing in the mind or in their spirit. The positive effects of RAW in people’s lives were apparent throughout the week, and many said they loved the results of the RAW practice.

Another tool we gave people to practice throughout the week was walking with palms up and open to keep the shoulder joints open and the volume and space inside their upper chest more open and free so that they could breathe deeply and more fully. With all the hiking people do at the Ranch, this tool was a real winner as it really helps to keep the body fluid and moving with ease through strenuous exercise. We also included Sounding in every class, and showed how making sound is a great way to reduce stress and a way to elevate the vibration of life.

All week people experienced a unique variety of Nia Classes. We included focuses such as The Feet – how to use the feet in class and on the walks around the Ranch; and The Pelvis, Chest, and Head – how to be upright and not look down, which is so valuable when people walk and hike so much and are not used to that kind of activity.

Sunday through Friday we co-facilitated Spirit Week with Phyllis Pilgrim. The first half of each day’s Spirit Week class was facilitated by Carlos and myself, providing a physical experience to drive home the cognitive information of RAW; The Art of Listening; Sensory IQ: the Feet; and the Chakras. Phyllis ended each day with a guided meditation, which was a perfect way to recapitulate and embody the information from the place of stillness. It was wonderful to work with Phyllis – so much so we are coming back next year to do it again.

And, we were blessed with a special event of entertainment from Jeff, Nia CEO, who performed Monday evening. Fifty guests listened to Jeff sing and play folk songs on the guitar, many of which were his original tunes. The review was so good that he says he’ll be back next year!
