In 1994, Dr. Deborah Kern introduced Nia to the National Wellness Conference, where she led one Nia class. Since then, Dr. Deborah Kern, and Nia teachers Brit Bensen, Cindy Snow, Winalee Zeeb, Lauri Krupski, and Karri Phelps, to name a few, have taught Nia classes and educated conference attendees about the depth of Nia work. Three years ago Debbie and Carlos were invited to teach Nia classes each day of the Conference. Based on the success of the previous years, this year Debbie and Carlos were invited to present a full day pre-conference based on The Body’s Way™, called, “Dancing Through Life.”
Cindy Snow gave a glowing report, “It was the largest turn out in history for both Debbie and Carlos sessions and others. The Nia Technique has clearly gained momentum among wellness professionals. The foundation of Nia at The National Wellness Conference was created by Dr Deborah Kern over the past decade. It was sad she could not be there to see this powerful explosion of Nia participation. I know three people who are attending the White Belt training because of National Wellness Conference.”
The presentations at the conference are tremendously diverse, and it attracts a wide variety of people with an interest in wellness. Attendees of the National Wellness Conference largely consist of wellness practitioners and health educators who work in hospital settings, the workplace, social work/government agencies, and universities. They are well educated, credentialed, and find the practical application of Nia refreshing and adaptable to their work because of Nia’s user-friendly approach.
Attendees at this year’s conference experienced Nia teachings in The Body’s Way, The Art of Listening, and RAW, giving them first-hand experience in turning cognitive information into a sensation.
Carlos said,” People seemed very open to Nia and more excited than I have witnessed in previous years. There were at least 50 people in each class. It was obvious that they were not all ‘movers’, yet they truly understood the philosophy of Nia. This was the first time Debbie and I guided so many Nia sessions with a captive audience in this realm. The tools we shared with the attendees were not only useful, but also useable in their practices, such as the Art of Listening. Relating to them was great!”
Inner IDEA is the first Mind-Body conference created with the organization IDEA, with the intention of inviting people to experience wellness through body, mind, and spirit. Nia was one of the sponsors of the conference, which gave Nia a physical presence as supporters, leaders, and visionaries in the Mind-Body arena. More than 25 Nia teachers attended, and Debbie, Carlos, and Jeff, Nia CEO, gave a total of five presentations. Jeff spoke about The Business of Body-Mind Fitness, and had people on the edge of their seats, riveted to his every word, finishing to a standing ovation.
Here’s what Debbie had to say:
“In an intimate setting, we were able to create an environment that truly supported a Mind-Body experience. It was great that the convention was limited to 500, which made sessions personable. What was exciting for me was being a keynote speaker on the first day! I spoke about the future of integrated fitness and what it meant to become a sacred athlete.
I was extremely nervous sitting on stage with life coach and university professor Lorna Francis, world-renowned author and speaker Pam Peeke, and the creator of the Foundation for Inspired learning and co-founder of Coach for Life Peter Reding who I have admired over the years. I did my best, and I definitely was in RAW.
Our FreeDance session in the evening was a hit, and of course Carlos put together a great music experience. Presenting RAW gave us an opportunity to share a little bit of Nia’s somatic education. I know next year is sure to be even better!”
The IDEA World conference is the most prestigious fitness conference in the world. In 1984, at a time when exercising and being fit meant you had to have a no-pain no-gain mentality and everyone wore shoes while exercising, Debbie and Carlos presented Nia for the first time at the conference, with a focus on moving to feel good–and they did it barefoot!
That pioneering moment was a catalyst for change in the fitness industry. At this year’s conference, Debbie and Carlos were named as one of the top three Program Directors of the Year – this is quite an honor.
In Carlos’ words:
“It was great to see that the bodies at IDEA World were not half as tight and bound as they were even five years ago. Their physical forms were much more supple and relaxed. People seemed much less bound in physicality, and not so Yang,
IDEA World was great–it was a quality conference, and they did a good job at staging the event. Nia was well received, and everyone also loved the Nia music! The attendees appreciated our style of teaching and how Debbie and I integrate space, relaxation, opposites, and art into our class experience.”
Each day’s Nia sessions were fully attended. More than 5000 people from 60 countries attended the conference.
In November, Debbie and Carlos will present a unique Nia workshop at the first annual International Sound Healers Conference in Santa Fe, NM.
