From the CEO
Having returned from a month long business trip to Paris, Rome, Boston, New York, Charlottesville, and Chicago, I feel a sense of being grounded that I had been missing in my spirit. My trip to Rome was a trip “home.” Having moved so often as a child, the longest station of my life until I moved to Portland at 30 years old, was in Rome, where I lived in my formative years, from age 9 through 13. Over the years I felt something was missing: a hometown, a foundation, a culture, an identity. I never in my wildest mind thought of telling those who asked where I was from, that I was from Rome.
The life of a gypsy had many benefits and I am grateful that I had all the opportunities provided by being raised in transition. However I did miss having a hometown. Now I found it and I am happy to call Rome my hometown. The circle is complete.
The language came back to me very quickly and I could see my reflection in every cobblestone, fountain, church, and café. That said, one of the benefits of being raised a gypsy was that it gave me the tools to stand on my own two feet, since I was forced to adapt quickly to new environments and personal changes. This has been gift and, as a result, I have a developed a sense of inner security that gives me strength and confidence. However, I have still always longed for a community and a foundation of family on which I could identify and be committed and accountable to. Nia has given me this. Having the foundation of the Nia community – all of you, as well as those at Nia Headquarters – is a gift. I can stand on my own – I know this – but, working together as a team in a community allows me to capitalize on my strengths and gives me the opportunity to support and be in alignment with the rest of the team.
I invite you to take a look around to see where you can provide your strengths to your community. I’m sure you will find many abilities and talents you can bring so that you all work together to maintain a strong foundation from which you all can grow and contribute.
Sincerely,

Jeff Stewart
