Letting Go and Giving Thanks

For those of us in the US, November is the time of year we feel the most called to give thanks and reflect upon our life, work, family and friends. The Fall shift into November, into colder weather and longer nights, seems just right for self-reflection. It always feels like a good time to rest and settle into where we are. It is a good time to stand in and own what we’ve done over the year, and to look into what is about to come. It is hard to believe it will soon be 2007, as we remember well New Year’s 2006 and the dreams that danced in our heads and hearts.

This year has been a vastly transformative year for Nia and for both Carlos and myself in many ways. The business and how we do what we do has asked that we take responsibility in new ways, and we are. In essence, we’ve stopped holding and locking with our knees when we feel fear about moving into the future we’ve always dreamed of, and we’ve started integrating spring-loaded joints to propel us into that future.

The new ways of doing business we’ve been embracing are opening up other areas of creativity and power. I must say that I, Debbie, am enjoying the opportunity to step into a new kind of power, one that over the years I have avoided for fear of being too pushy and too strong a woman! I allowed a fear of being alone, which is the ultimate fear for me, to slow me at times in directing what I envisioned for Nia. Now, with the new ways of doing business we’ve created, my work — this Nia creation and the business and dance of Nia – is taking on a whole new level of development. I am shifting, and my work and world is shifting in turn.

The greater transformation occurring is reflected everywhere. Right now, I am in the midst of using my Nia practice to stay present to the openings of life even as I deal with the reality of aging parents who must move closer to me or my sister in order to be taken care of. I can’t help but feel pain in realizing that chapters of their lives are closing. Yet I know that one door closes another opens, and the continuous transformations and current shifts I am experiencing are providing me with a new groundedness to handle these life changes.

The bittersweet of saying good-bye is all too real. Things do end, and things go away and never come back, even people. With the changing colors of Fall I am reminded that we are all a part of the ever-evolving events of life that move us forward, even if we feel we are not ready. No matter how stuck we feel, how deeply rooted we are in the challenges of our current circumstances and in our stuff, life moves and gives us the space and the opportunity to move, if movement is what is next, or to be still and breathe awhile. For this I am thankful.

What can you reflect upon and give thanks for? What will prepare you for the future you have always dreamed of? Embrace your own constant transformation and move with purpose into the future.
